At times, many domainers are unsure if a domain’s Alexa rank is a true indicator of traffic. Here is how I would try to gauge the domain type-in numbers. I first look at the Alexa traffic rank. Sometimes, parked domains do not show accurate Alexa rankings due to less frequent rank updates. The next step would definitely be to use a backlinks checker. If a domain has no backlinks and yet receives traffic, it could either be pure type-in or bot traffic. To make sure that it really is type in traffic, I use a Wordtracker search query to find exact phrase searches a day. For example, if I am analyzing the word “debt consolidation”, these would be my findings.

Exact phrase searches on search engines for the word “debt consolidation” is around 2500 a day. I would then try searching for a combined phrase match “debtconsolidation”. Wordtracker shows that around 12 people/day search for the combined words. Finally, I would run a search with the extension. This gives me an idea, with some sampling/software error provision, that atleast 4-8 people purely type-in debtconsolidation dot com each day.

Now, in this case, although the actual site debtconsolidation.com has a traffic rank of 673,661, it isn’t the natural type-in traffic rank. This domain has around 2610 backlinks which could account for 80% of the actual traffic source. I would estimate this domain gets around 300 visitors a day from backlinks + search engine traffic + type-in +any PPC advertising sources. Without these sources, this domain might not get more than 300 pure type-in visitors a month.

However, this is still a premium domain, with an estimated value near to a million dollars.

From my experience, domains at Parked.com, do get indexed in around 2-3 weeks. Even if it doesn’t, it is very important to make proper use of your titles, title tags and meta descriptions. It all helps in getting a good quality score from Yahoo. Making your domain relevant to the keyword is vital. So make sure that you have your meta tags, title and keyword properly set up the minute you point your nameservers to parked. For this, locate the domain you wish to manage from the dashboard domain search bar (located below the quick links). Now click on the edit link which is the very last column on your domain search results page. This will bring you to the main domain editing page.

On the very top of the domain editing page, you will see the domain title tag. Click on the link edit to add a call to action. Let me use one of my domains as an example. On my domain www.ukvehicleinsurance.com, the title reads “get a low rate quote now..”. That is my call to action. Let me add that if you are running any ad campaigns, your title should match your actual ad header. So if you were advertising your domain with an ad title like “30% Discount on Car Insurance”, your title should continue the visitor’s flow of thoughts with an apt title like ” Save 30% More With a Quick Quote Now!”.

Now lets move on to the title tag. Remember that the title tag appears on your browser title and should not be confused with the domain title. The title tag can be found lower down in your edit domain page in the advanced options on the left side. Here in this case, I have added a short title tag to my domain which reads “UK Vehicle Insurance”. You can view this on your browser title heading. Your title tag need not be lengthy and must be a quick short keyword rich description.

Finally, lets enter some description in the meta description in the description tag on the right. Here, for this domain, my meta description reads, “Cheap UK Vehicle Insurance Rates. Find Low Rate UK Motor Car Insurance Policies. Compare Cheapest UK Car Insurance Companies Now!”. This makes use of the maximum permissible words for your description on Parked.

So there you are, you now have a relevant domain page at Parked.com. I will later post more details on customizing images, adding text, editing keywords etc.

Some domainers make more than $5000 a month, and some much more, and I know, for a fact, that these people are just plain simple domainers like you and me. This industry is worth investing time in, provided that you really have the “right approach”. Or else, someone could spend 10 years in this business and yet not be able to quit their day time jobs.

The right approach, is the ability to be constantly aware of new keywords and online search patterns and buying domain names with either a great type-in potential or a future intrinsic value appreciation. For example, maybe someone buys ” xyz treatment.com”, which is a newly discovered human disease, and which holds huge potential for diagnosis and treatment in the near future. When awareness of this disease increases, and advances in treatment of this disease are made, we could expect the value of this domain name to increase manifold.

The decision to devote your time to this profession is solely yours and should be based on your belief in your abilities, patience and will power. The ideal approach would be to take this business more like a “hobby” at the start, where any income made, is like an extra bonus to your salary. Slowly but steadily, if this extra income becomes substantial enough, you may then want to think of turning this hobby into a profession. This is the safe approach to the domaining profession.

This article took a bit longer for me to write as I was busy optimizing my own portfolio. I always tell myself, there’s tons to be learnt about domains, and too little time left. Why? Because almost every good domain name has already been registered or being registered while I write this. This motivates me to keep learning one day at a time. Plus, the thought that I could own a domain which might, in due course of time, become immensely valuable and sought after, keeps the adrenalin rushing. I enjoy waking up each morning a domainer.. period.

Okay, now getting back to the main topic. How do we buy good names when there are so few of them left? There are 3 general paths to this goal;

1. Dropped Domain Buying

2. Trend Awareness Domain Buying

3. Keyword Research Based Domain Buys.

From my understanding, most domainers use the first domain buying technique. Buying domain names from dropped lists is much easier and doesn’t need a whole lot of research or keyword analysis. However, there is limited learning potential from this method.

Being quickly aware of new trends in the market and buying domain names to capitalize on a new niche is trend awareness buying. For example, you might learn that there is a new type of alternative fuel being developed. Buying such names in time could prove to be extremely valuable. I would recommend browsing technology websites, world news related sites, scientific and health related sites etc, to bolster your rapid learning curve. Bookmark sites like techcrunch.com which feature breaking news on new innovations and technology. Google trends is another great option for quickly keeping abreast of new emerging keyword searches. These could be your greatest sources for buying superb domain names.

Finally, my favorite method of buying domain names, is via keyword research. For this, I use Wordtracker extensively.

Almost everything is possible with will power, good research and fast action.

Buy good domain names – not just names that sound good to you, but names that are keywords which occur in daily SE searches. For this you could use specialized keyword analysis software like Wordtracker. For example; keywords like freegames get actually typed in with extension. People actually type in freegames.com or porn.com. I know that such names are already taken and would cost a fortune to buy, but there are still thousands of search queries which people still type in. Your job would be to research and find these. Needless to say, make sure that you don’t end up buying domains with lengthy keywords as very few people are going to type in buytoysinwestvirginia.com. Your better bet would be buytoys.com. Or wvtoys.com.

Knowledge is power. Read… Read and Read. Also, ASK whenever possible. But only ask when you are sure that your answer is nowhere to be found. That helps you engage in self study and lesser reliance on other people. Sometimes, the person who may guide you, may actually not be an expert. You could end up getting wrong information and wasting time on fruitless endeavors. Always try to find out information yourself first and only when you have reached a dead end …then ask someone. Why? Because if you try finding information yourself, you most likely end up reading a lot of related information which you never knew existed in the first place. This helps you increase your knowledge. For example, you wanted to know some medical keywords and you ran searches on forums and search engines, while searching, you might end up finding that there is a new lesser known keyword that pays much more and is a better niche to target. In my initial months of domaining I first started reading every recognized forum and made various searches for my related information. I didn’t know what a keyword was and didn’t even know what PPC meant. I have yet tons to learn and very less time on hand. Work HARD today, and you WILL reap the benefits of your domain tomorrow!

Ask people how things work. If you park your domains, ask your account manager if in doubt. This helps you establish a better relationship with your domain parking company and also makes sure that you understand their parking system well. Be in regular contact with your parking provider to find out vital information on upcoming upgrades/feature updates they are planning. This helps you gain an advantage in advance. For example, you might learn that your domain parking company is introducing new templates or getting a new feed targeting Europe in a few weeks. This knowledge can help you plan your domain portfolio in advance to gain maximum returns.

Don’t just give up on any parking service in 10-15 days just because you ended up getting 3-8 cents. Try to figure out what could be wrong on your side. Maybe you need to use better keywords? Maybe you need a change of template, a nice header? Try it all out before you move. And always make a note of changes made to your domain and the resulting change in CPC & CTR if any. This can help you lock in your best performing keyword and template. It takes time but its worth it.

Moving from one parking service to the other is time consuming and with no success guarantee. Its better to have solid built up stats from one service which can eventually also help sell a domain name based on steady revenue stats.

I sometimes notice that new domainers seem to lack patience to do all this and just throw out broad questions like “tell me the best keyword for this domain”.. you give them an answer and they are gone. Then, they come again after 20 days saying ” now tell me what should i do with this domain’s keyword”. The learning potential here is very minimum and the person isn’t even understanding if the keyword being given out is relevant to his domain.

Try keywords which
1) Have a better CPC value &
2) Which are relevant to your domain’s theme
3) Which bring up related ads which a visitor might be interested to explore

If any of the above 3 combinations don’t match, you will end up getting a low CTR. Sometimes higher paying keywords bring up ads which are so boring and hopeless in ad content that nobody would be interested to click on them. We have to realize that we already have a disadvantge of having a parked domain page. It should be our endeavor to use empathy and look at our own domain landing page as a visitor and check to see if we ourselves like what we see. Once you have these solid principles in mind, you will start seeing a better CTR and resulting payoffs.

Sometimes it is better to target a lower paying keyword with better ads and CTR, simply because you atleast make some money rather than nothing. Makes sense right?

Articles can get you tons of quality free backlinks and corresponding traffic. Let us explore how to get backlinks. But you first need to focus on some key concepts.

1) Who needs these articles?
2) What kind of articles are linked to the most?
3) What keyword driven articles will make you the most profits?
4) How can you maximize your returns?

1) Starting with, who needs these articles the most?

MFA (Made for Advertising) sites and affiliate marketing sites link up to these articles the most. That is why we see many articles spread all over the internet. This is a huge opportunity to get hundreds of links, because these sites are constantly looking for fresh new articles to add. Your article, if well written, is bound to get linked fast. Just sit back and watch your backlinks grow.

2) Secondly, what kind of articles are linked to the most?

Lets use some reverse psychology. First, we have to find out what keywords make up most of the MFA sites. We can reasonably assume that most of the MFA sites are targeting high paying keywords like debt consolidation, credit cards, insurance, student loans etc. This in turn implies that there is a huge demand for articles in these niches.

3) What keyword driven articles will make you the most profits?

We can easily infer from point # 2 that articles centered around debt consolidation, credit card debt, insurance etc will definitely make you the most profits. Why? Because if you write an original quality article on these topics, your article will be linked to by hundreds of sites in mere days. If you have a site monetized by adsense or affiliate products, you could really make some decent sales conversions via visitors coming in from these new article based links.

4) How can you maximize your returns?

Take time to write a really helpful article. Something that gives readers additional knowledge. Make a keyword rich title, like ” 10 Tips to Reduce Credit Card Debt”. Here, Reduce Credit Card Debt is your keyword. It would be great if you could get a low competing, high paying keyword for your article. This is a bit tough, but if you are good at keyword research, it should be fairly easy.

Remember, don’t write articles about your site. Your article should focus on the main article title theme and at the end write a thoughtful signature like ” Wayne Writer is an experienced debt consolidation specialist based out of Chicago. To read more on Wayne’s Effective Debt Solution Techniques Visit “your site link”. This can get you substantial attention and serve your end purpose of gaining vital links and quality website traffic.

The final step would be to market your article so that it doesn’t stay limited to just a few top article directories. Go all out and spread your article. You spent time sharing some information, why not expose it to the maximum possible audience reach? For this, I spend a few bucks ($10) to submit up to 5 articles using isnare. These guys have done a great job for me in the past and are pretty good. You can also check out other article submitters with a good track record. By doing this, you can easily get hundreds of links for each article.
